The half-life of information in the field of information technology is around 18 months. Over twenty years this amounts to learning, unlearning, and relearning roughly 10,000 times what was originally known. "We started with a good deal of knowledge twenty years ago" said Lynn Beckwith, President of Automation Consultants. "Since then, computer speed and capacity have increased by about 1000 times. It's hard to imagine a field with more rapid change. It seems like half of what we do we have never done before and the other half we will never do again. Of course, few fields have as great an effect on our business lives. American productivity and progress are tied to computer technology, which makes it all very interesting and worthwhile." Originally named for "office automation", Automation Consultants also gets calls for manufacturing systems and automotive parts. They do have clients in manufacturing, but also get automotive calls, like a trucker saying "I'll have the rig there in two hours for an oil change". Years ago the company received an inquiry addressed to Anatomy Consultants. These and calls from kids looking for video games provide entertainment for consultants busy dealing with business people and accountants. Mr. Beckwith continued, "We started Automation Consultants originally to help automate offices with word processing. A greater need presented itself in the world of business information systems. The interesting part is the computer and information technologies; the challenging part is people ... getting businesspeople, salespeople, managers, accountants, and bookkeepers to work smoothly together using computers."
