Picture Implementing a Business Information System
Sometimes a good analogy is the best way to understand a complex situation. The following analogy applies to the implementation of a business information system. It is a pictorial journey with more truth than whimsy, as anyone who has gone through the real experience will testify.
At the forefront we see a fence, the initial barrier that everyone must hurdle. Inertia, fear, confusion, needs, desires, requirements, selection, expectations, consensus, planning, training, expense, complexity, fatigue, and mistakes are some of the barbs that await us. Painful scratches can result, so we plan our jump to the new system carefully.
After our leap of faith we encounter a dry, barren section, where the going is often tough, unrewarding, and the destination may become obscure. We have brought enough water and good shoes, because going back is not a good option. We must be alert for bugs.
In the distance, the wild blue yonder beckons. It is compelling and seductive. The undisciplined become enraptured, spending valuable time and effort contemplating its promise. If we go there we will find that it is far more dangerous than it appears from a distance.
Finally, our eyes are drawn to the true destination ... greener pastures, where life is much better. We will be comfortable there, steadily improving and building strength. With proper guidance, we will see the surrounding forest and trees distinctly. From there we will prepare for our next move forward.
